Hello everyone! In this article I would like to show you two things about the wrist lock: best time to apply the “cavalier” and how to apply it.

When to apply

If an attacker is stabbing you, you make the defense and punch him. Now from the theoretical point of view in Krav Maga you can do the “cavalier” with a solid basis on his wrist, you grab his fist and you bring him down. This is ok in theory.

In a real life situation don’t try to defense, attack him and do immediately the “cavalier”: “cavalier” armlock doesn’t work in a streetfight!

So, if it doesn’t work why we teach in Krav Maga?

Because you have to apply it when your opponent is almost knock out! You have to apply it when you have finished your opponent in order to take him down.

How to apply

Here is the technique (theory):

  • Grab your opponent wrist with one hand (opponent right wrist with your left hand).
  • Grab his fist with the other hand and twist it.
  • He has to fall behind you, behind your shoulder.

Here is the application (practical):

  • Don’t play power against power with your opponent.
  • Suddenly: hit his fist and take his wrist! Even your opponent is strong you will win his strenght.
  • If the opponent is very strong instead your hand use your elbow against his fist.

When you do the “cavalier” you can’t decide where drop your opponent: it depends on where he’s putting his arm power (up, behind, to him).

Moreover, when you make the “cavalier” you cause pain and when you see he’s feeling the pain you have to put your fingers inside his fingers in order to take out the knife.

In a real situation this could be too longer to do so it is better take the opponent down, you can play with his wrist and elbow on the ground and it will be easier take the knife out.

You can also use the “cavalier” to move your opponent in order to cover you from an other attack: in this case your opponent will be a shield!
